Kurdish question enters new phase after end of ceasefire

- InterviewsWith the end of the ceasefire, on 1 June, the Kurdish question enters a new phase
Short before darkness falls, we are having a short conversation with one of the important names of PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party). In a tick, he summarizes the entered process and points out to what is going-on, attacks and the increasing violence. The information he gives is very concrete; the number of the dying guerrillas, the identification tags of soldiers taken by guerrillas, removed weapons and the number of soldiers’ heavy bags that guerilla couldn’t carry. “The problem was brought to this point by AKP (Justice and Development Party) and by not serious Turkish politicians. Turkish army and the media, on the other hand, conceal the happenings” he says.
That is really so; the Kurdish problem, which Turkish Republic in some measure took over from the Ottoman Empire and which the denial and destruction policies against Kurdish people brought forth with the building of a republic without democracy, is entering now in a different phase.
The establisher of the new process is Abdullah Öcalan; the leader of the movement which is also called the last Kurdish rebel for the last 40 years. Öcalan had proved the case flashily with his sharp analysis of the former periods of the Kurdish problem .
The summary of Öcalan’s idea for the solution was; “We will preserve our existence and adopt our honor.” He himself was included in his party, guerrilla movement and the public reality that he organized with all his political and social influences for 30 years since he stated these words. Although he has been under arrest in a one-man jail for the last 11 years, he evaluates his existing circumstances with maturity and reveals his policies based upon scientific and moral foundations with historical consciousness.
His statements were so easy; for a political solution, the government should answer both to Öcalan and the PKK. And they answer, but with army, police, special squads, media, and politician, and economy for a total war. AKP, which monopolized the power of Turkish Republic for the last 8 years, however, followed a policy based on war and conflict –as governments before it - rather than finding a solution to this problem.
Firstly, this situation must be seen well by everyone. In a period, when even the leaders of the Turkish public opinion, ex bureaucrats and important representatives from international area sided with dialogue with Öcalan for the solution, why didn’t AKP do that? In the first periods, AKP said “We will solve the problem but the state is conservative” but now AKP exists in all areas including MIT (Nationalist Intelligence Service), education, justice, army, economy media and Çankaya (Presidential Palace).
However, the solution for the Kurdish problem is more distant and the war has started to kill more people than ever at the moment. The state of affairs is not changing for better for firstly AKP and its supporters, which the political powers, people and media in Turkey must see well. The new starting process will be met with total struggle by Kurdish people.
I want to transmit my observations on the guerilla front with a summary of my conversations with seniors members of KCK (Democratic Confederation of Kurdistan), HPG (People Defence Forces) and PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party); “Everything is ready for the new period. Having resisted continuously for months against the violent cannon-, air- and ground-attacks of two countries, guerilla forces are now deploying on total resistance line against the deadlock politics. The deployments are not limited with only mountains; it includes also the self defense of people; defense in democratic area and the self defense in the cities, villages and counties of four parts of Kurdistan. This fight to be given and its results will have different sides with the former ones. This is only way to preserve our existence, our leadership, our people and to adopt our honor.”
The large part of the coupling in Kurdish front is aware of the situation. This process points out to a national common spirit of comradeship and the formation of a wide democratic front; which the Kurdish people in South recognize somewhat. But the war block under AKP leadership, which bonds Anti-Kurd front, is going after pulling a part of Kurdish people to its side and gaining legitimization to its following attacks. As I said, a large part of Kurdish people are aware of this game. If the South Kurds participate in AKP and Turkey’s war block against Kurdish people, the acquisitions in South may disappear in one breath and the political powers in South may find themselves in other lands as refugees because Iran-Turkey based the anti-Kurd coalition aims not only at North Kurds and PKK; they will firstly defuse the Kurdish constitution in center South. Öcalan’s warnings about this subject are just answerable. He points out to this situation while emphasizing the necessity for the composing of Kurds’ self defense powers against all-out slaughter.
The projection of international balances in Kurdistan may seem complicated but in fact very clear. Everybody is looking for support for its own policies. PKK can see the plans on Kurds and Kurdistan well because it is a power that keeps itself original and separately; that’s why it speaks loud that AKP’s plans can’t bring any benefit to Kurds. Turkey with the deadlock of AKP and still nebulous amendment efforts of CHP (Republican People’s Party) must preserve the political way well. So, an overlook at the last 30 years and a policy with the speech of those years don’t suffice to understand the new coming process.
Kurdish people now want a real solution; they want to live honorable and free, they don’t want to putter about. They mulishly put the ways into words years long. The common solution is stated by Öcalan in Imralı, by BDP in the parliament, by the Kurdish society on the streets with acts, by the widest and most effective organization of Kurds; KCK, by guerillas on mountains and by the exiled Kurdish people; who are ready for the solution; “Clear, statutory conversation and rapprochement for the political solution!...” So clear and straight. Those asking “With whom?” are clearly answered; “In Imralı, with the founder and leader of this movement; Öcalan and his organization…”
It is good to remind the experiences in the recent past to those not taking this situation seriously. Remember only the experiences after 15 February in 1999. Just think what would have happened if Öcalan hadn’t made a call from Imralı… The number of guerillas has been increased. The military power of guerillas is deployed at every part of Turkey, particularly along the Black Sea Coast, Mediterranean till Basra. It won’t be an overstatement to say the followings about the movement in all Kurdistan, it is organized in all areas of politics and social spheres, the organization and the troop basis are ideologically subjected to mutation, it got over each crisis of purge and war, it is a living, dynamic and extendable movement whose resistance results will revolutionize in the region. Each moment of the coming process will present itself and its results. The government had better move towards Imralı when before it is too late and when Marmara Sea is still calm. If the government chooses this key, no more blood will be smeared.
