Heavy sentences for student

Istanbul 10th High Criminal Court sentenced university student Uğur Ok to six years and three months in prison for alleged “membership of the youth branch of Marxist Leninist Communist Party (MLKP)".

Keleş Öztürk, lawyer of student Ok who has been jailed in Kandıra Prison in Kocaeli for three years, remarked in his defense at court that his client has been held under arrest on the basis of an unclear document and testimony of another defendant Salih Çelebi who however said that his statements about Ok were misinterpreted by the court.

Student Ok, remarking that he has a socialist world-view and only chaired the Socialist Youth Association in Balıkesir in 2006, said in his self-defense that; “It is a contradiction that my name appears on a document which is claimed to have been prepared by another member of the organization. It is also strange that I have been jailed for three years while that person was released after spending 15 months in prison.”
