Kurdish Guerrillas Take Over Military Posts around Şemdinli
01 August 2012Clashes have been going on for ten days
Clashes between People’s Defense Forces (HPG) and Turkish army continue in the region of Şemzinan (Şemdinli) for the last ten days as more and more posts and military positions have been taken over by Kurdish guerrillas. The HPG activity in the area is called a ‘siege’ by the organization itself and a ‘state of war’ by the local community and authorities.
The Turkish army operation in the area is backed up by high technology war planes and artilleries to which HPG units respond with howitzers and heavy weapons. Goman, Gostê and Karker hills and Gediktepe in the clashes area have been taken and controlled by guerrillas who on the other hand have been launching continuous attacks on military posts on the borderline. The Turkish army has been trapped in posts, unable to take action by land and make military shipment to the operation area as the control of all motorways has been taken by guerrillas. The aerial attacks of the army also remain ineffective because of the air defense by guerrilla units.
Uninterrupted aerial and ground attacks of the Turkish army have also inflicted heavy damage on the local community as many villages near the clashes area have been evacuated and vineyards and orchards have been destroyed since the beginning of the intense bombardment of the army.
The Turkish bombing has also targeted guerrilla-controlled Media Defense Areas where guerrillas have taken the control of several points the army has used for defense purposes for a long time. Guerrillas have most recently taken control of Gediktepe border post where the Turkish army had suffered a great loss as a result of a guerrilla action in June of 2010.
